Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is often noted in patients who have experienced a traumatic event during which they perceived themselves as helpless and unable to escape the circumstances. PTSD has been noted as one of the most life debilitating conditions that can lead to secondary mental illnesses such as Major Depressive Disorder, Hallucinations and Delusions, sexual disorders, and of course several types of addictions such as alcohol, drugs and even pornography. Families of afflicted persons with PTSD often suffer along with the afflicted person. Relationship dissatisfactions, domestic abuse, child abuse, elderly abuse, and even suicide are commonly experienced in the lives of untreated or poorly treated persons with PTSD.

Using the TEAM-CBT approach, psychologists at the Feeling Good Therapy and Training Center of Fremont have been treating PTSD with much better success than some of the more typical approaches that are designed by manuals. PTSD is not the same in each person. The effects of traumatic events in a person’s life can have several psychological and emotional meanings, depending on the core beliefs of the person. For example, sexual assault is often followed by several types of sexual dysfunction, pain disorder, infertility, obesity and relationship issues. And trauma that is originated in war is frequently followed by thought disorders such as delusions and hallucinations, and also followed by addictions to alcohol. Therefore, successful treatment of PTSD cannot be done by one type of medicine, or one type of manualized treatment approach. Instead, at the Feeling Good Therapy and Training Center, the patient’s own recount of the trauma, what it says about them now, and how they believe their lives are affected lead the way to a more tailor made treatment approach. Specific thought patterns, malfunctioning behavioral tendencies, certain cultural values, age and current medical condition of each patient are among other factors that influence the outcome of treatment.
